Welcome to the Priory of The Holy Isle of The Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, Inc. (SMOTJ).  The Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, Inc. is an autonomous and independent organization, incorporated in the United States, which seeks to emulate the chivalric and charitable traditions of the original Knights Templar.  Internationally known as Ordo Supremus Militaris Templi Hierosolymitani (OSMTH), this Knights Templar organization with its members in over forty countries, promotes the chivalric ideals of faith, honor, and honesty, with its focus on worldwide humanitarian aid.  OSMTH enjoys the distinction of being the only International Templar Order recognized as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with Special Consultative Status by the United Nations.

The Priory of The Holy Isle holds two Convents each year and conducts Investitures of new Knights and Dames at each Convent.  We also host Social Events throughout the year at a variety of locations.  The Priory has about forty active members who are primarily from the Hampton Roads – Williamsburg – Richmond corridor of Virginia

As did the Knights of old, the members of our Order believe they have an obligation to assist Christians at risk in the Holy Land and throughout the world and to keep the road to Jerusalem open to all.  The primary purpose of the Order is to help those who can’t help themselves, to encourage understanding between religions and to support the preservation and restoration of Templar sites around the world.  We encourage members to become modern pilgrims and visit the Holy Land and to maintain a Christian presence in that area of the world.

We believe in the spirit of the Knights Templar and their sacrifices, honor, and bravery.  We do not claim a direct linage to the ancient chivalric order, but we do try to emulate their ideals in our daily lives.  We remember their virtue and dedication to God through the motto of the Order, "Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed Nomini Tuo da gloriam" which is the Latin version of Psalm 115, verse 1 -- "Not unto us, Oh Lord, not unto us, but to Thy Name be given glory."
